JOHNSON COLLEGE IN THE COMMUNITY
Johnson College enjoys a strong relationship with area employers, other local institutions of higher education and a variety of community organizations. Johnson has taken a leading role in regional economic development and community partnerships by offering technical programs that complement business trends as well as developing programs that target education for high-demand occupations.
Johnson College students regularly assist area non-profit organizations with projects that benefit the organization while providing the students with hands-on experience and community service experience. In 2006, Architectural Drafting & Design Technology students surveyed and provided existing condition drawings for the Clarks Summit police station; Carpentry & Cabinetmaking Technology students built a conductor's podium for the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic and road barricades for the Steamtown Marathon. The Justus Fire Department benefited from maintenance on its fire truck provided by Diesel Truck Technology students and Veterinary Technology students provided medical care and some TLC for two pets stranded in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
The College instituted its Community Partners Award in 2005 in recognition of various kinds of support provided by friends of the College. Simplex Industries, Inc. was the recipient of the inaugural award and Tobyhanna Army Depot was honored in 2006.
Johnson also hosts activities that benefit the community such as blood drives, charity basketball games and reduced-fee spaying and neutering services for pets.
