Through a supportive and interactive learning experience, Johnson College offers peer and professional tutoring to encourage our students in becoming independent learners who can to achieve their personal goals.Tutoring is offered free of charge for currently registered students.
The time to seek assistance from a tutor is the minute you realize you need help. If you’re still not sure, ask yourself these questions:
- Am I falling behind in class?
- Am I having trouble with homework assignments?
- Have I done poorly on tests I have taken?
- Do I have difficulty writing a paper?
If you answered “Yes” to even one question above, you should make a tutoring appointment soon.
- Only Johnson College students may receive tutoring services.
- You can come back as many times as needed.
- No, we can’t help with tests. That’s considered cheating.
What will tutoring do for me?
- The goal of the tutoring program is to provide the resources to help strengthen your knowledge and understanding of the material in your college classes. It also promotes the processes of active learning, independence, and motivation.
- Free tutoring is provided to currently enrolled students for selected content areas. Tutoring schedules will be available each semester.
- The tutoring staff includes professional and peer tutors. Peer tutors are fellow students who must meet certain qualifications and participate in an extensive training program. Tutors will work with you to help you understand the subject. They will serve as a guide, but they will not do your work for you.
- Online Tutoring
Johnson College students can access Tutor.com, a free online tutoring service in a variety of subjects, including Math, Writing, Chemistry, Physics, Human Anatomy & Physiology, and College Reading & Study Skills. Access for Tutor.com is available through the Lackawanna County Library System and can be found at: LCLS Tutor.com. The available hours are 4pm to 10pm. You will need to have a Lackawanna County Library System (LCLS) card to access this service. Library cards can be picked up at any LCLS branch location.

Academic Learning Center Policies
The following policies were established to facilitate efficiency and provide equal opportunity for students to access services.
- Arrive on time. The tutor will provide you with a 10 minute grace period to show up for your appointment. After 10 minutes, your appointment will be forfeited and marked as a no-show.
- No-Show Policy. If a student misses three scheduled appointments for any reason, they will be removed from the schedule and will be required to reschedule their appointments. The original time requested will not be guaranteed.
- Cancellations. If you are not able to attend your tutoring appointment, please contact your academic advisor or the college counselor. Cancellations that occur with less than 24 hours notice from the scheduled appointment time will be considered a no-show.
- Number of Sessions. Students may schedule one appointment per subject at a time. You may schedule another appointment at the end of the tutoring session. Students may schedule a maximum of 3 tutoring appointments (up to an hour in length) per subject per week. Multiple tutoring appointments for one subject in one day are not permitted.
- Courses Covered. The Learning Center provides tutoring for many courses offered at Johnson College. If there is not a tutor in a course you need help with, every effort will be put forth to locate, hire, and train a suitable tutor for your request. Please note that, due to the time involved in completing the employment process, it may take several weeks to hire a tutor. The earlier you seek a tutor, the better!
- Student Enrollment. Individuals receiving tutoring must be currently enrolled at Johnson College.
- Preparation. Students are expected to come to their sessions prepared. Students must be attending class, completing the required readings, attempting homework, and preparing questions for the tutor. Students are also expected to bring their syllabi, notebook, textbook, and current assignment to the tutoring session.
- Test Day Tutoring. Cram tutoring sessions on a test day are ineffective and discouraged. Tutoring has a greater impact on grades when the student attends tutoring on a regular basis.
- Tutor Expectations. The Academic Learning Center is staffed by professional, faculty and peer tutors who will not teach the course to you. We will help you improve your understanding of materials. Tutors will not tell you the answers or complete your assignments for you.
- Reality Check. Tutoring is a learning process that requires time, effort, and commitment. Waiting until the last minute to seek assistance (i.e. right before an exam) is an ineffective approach towards tutoring and learning.
