Johnson College Open House Scheduled for March

Johnson College will hold an Open House for prospective students and their families on Saturday, March 2, 2013 starting at 9:30 a.m.

Open House activities will include information sessions on the admissions process, on-site applications, information on financial aid (financial aid is available to those who qualify), and student services such as housing, student life, student support, athletics, and career services. Tours of each technical area will also be conducted and department chairs will be available to review the specifics of their programs.

Those interested in attending the Open House can register online at www.johnson.edu/openhouse or by calling the Admissions Department at 570-702-8900. Application fees will be waived for those who apply at the Open House.

A Financial Aid FAFSA Presentation is also scheduled for 9:00am that day for students and families who wish to ask questions or seek financial advice before the Open House begins.

The Open House and Financial Aid FAFSA Presentation will be held in the Moffat Building, located on the College’s campus at 3427 North Main Avenue in Scranton, which is off exit 190 on I-81.

Still Time to Register for Welding and CNC Courses

Johnson College’s Continuing Education Department’s next Welding classes are scheduled to start January 28, 2013. Students can choose from the following two welding training options:
• Basic Cutting & Welding: 375-hour course, 17 weeks, Monday through Thursday, 4pm-10:15pm, $5250.00 (CareerLink Funding available, call 570-344-7037 to see if you qualify)
• Professional Welder: 725-hour, 32 weeks, Monday through Thursday, 4pm-10:15pm, $11,500.00 (CareerLink Funding available, call 570-344-7037 to see if you qualify)

The next Continuing Education Customized Welding classes are scheduled to start March 5, 2013.
• Customized Welding: 64 hour, 8 weeks, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6pm-10pm $650.00

Johnson College’s Continuing Education Department is also offering a CNC Certificate Program. This course is scheduled to start on January 28, 2013 and will end on June 27, 2013. The CNC Certificate Program is a 510-hour course, 22 weeks, Monday through Thursday, 4pm-10:15pm, $6250.00 (CareerLink Funding available, call 570-344-7037 to see if you qualify).

Johnson College to Hold Spay Day 2013

The Animal Care Center at Johnson College is currently accepting applications for Spay Day 2013, which will take place on Wednesday, February 27, 2013. This will be the ninth year that the College has celebrated Spay Day in order to help control pet overpopulation.

According to The Humane Society of the United States, “World Spay Day is an annual campaign of The HSUS and Humane Society International that shines a spotlight on spay/neuter—a proven way to save the lives of companion animals, feral cats, and street dogs who might otherwise be put down in a shelter or killed on the street.”

This one-day only clinic at Johnson College offers discounted spaying and neutering services for dogs and cats. Only residents of Lackawanna County with an income of less than $25,000 annually are invited to apply.

The deadline for filing applications is February 15, 2013 and will be strictly adhered to. Applications can be obtained at www.johnson.edu, by calling 570-702-8961, or by stopping by the Animal Care Center on Johnson College’s campus at 3427 North Main Avenue, Scranton. Incomplete applications or those submitted without verification of income will not be considered. Submitting an application does not guarantee that your animal will be accepted. Please no phone calls to check on the status of applications; Animal Care Center personnel will call eligible applicants to set up an appointment time. Also, day of walk-ins will not be accepted.

Johnson College Open Benefits Students

On May 18, 2012, 120 golfers, which included a record 26 Johnson College alumni, gathered at Blue Ridge Trail Golf Club in Mountain Top, PA for the benefit of current and future Johnson College students. The 20th Annual Johnson College Open, presented by sponsors Blackout Design and Sweda Advertising, raised over $35,000 – the most money to date for the Presidential Scholarship Fund!

Plans for the 21st Annual Johnson College Open are already underway. The tournament will be held on Friday, May 17, 2013 at Blue Ridge Trail Golf Club in Mountaintop, PA (rain or shine). Johnson College Giving Tree Benefits Over 100 Local Children

One of the Johnson College Social Force Club’s most successful activities throughout the academic year is the Annual Giving Tree. This year, the College’s students, faculty, and staff made holiday gift wishes come true for over 100 local children in need. Thanks to the Giving Tree, the holidays are much brighter for children in three of Scranton’s Head Start Programs and for many of the children of the College’s very own students and alumni as well.

Cars on Campus Sets Record

Over 165 classic cars and unique vehicles were on display for Johnson College’s Cars on Campus on September 9, 2012. The event, presented by Manasek Auto Parts, Inc., raised a record $7,825.87 for the Cars on Campus Scholarship Fund, far exceeding the $5,000 goal!

Hundreds of car lovers, students, alumni, and community friends visited campus to enjoy the sights of the remarkable automobiles, the sounds of DJ Conor McGuigan, and the tastes of some delicious refreshments.

Awards were given out in a number of categories. Big winners included Tom Millard’s 1955 Brockway, which won the 2012 Best in Show Award, and George Caswell’s Cadillac Limousine, which took home this year’s President’s Pick Award.

Rudi Dickinson ‘11, who was instrumental in reviving the College’s car show three years ago after a five year hiatus, shares, “It’s great to give back to the College which has given me the skills to pursue a successful life. My hope is that the Cars on Campus Scholarship gives others the same opportunities.”
