Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning Technology + Plumbing
Program Overview

The Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) with Plumbing program provides students with the skills needed for entry-level positions in the installing, repairing and troubleshooting of various heating and cooling equipment and the residential and light commercial plumbing industry. Students will work with industrial standard tools associated with equipment such as oil and gas furnaces, refrigeration units, and air conditioning equipment. Students will also gain hands-on experience installing, servicing, and maintaining water supply, drainage, waste, and vent (DWV) systems using industry-standard tools, materials, and methods.
Note: Students who have completed the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Technology (AAS) degree are not eligible to pursue the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Technology with Plumbing (AAS) degree. However, those students may enroll in and complete the Plumbing Academic Certificate program.
Career Opportunities
Employment opportunities consist of HVAC installers, controls technicians, service technicians, maintenance mechanics, plumbers, engineers, programmers, research development, management, sales, and dispatch; as well as residential service plumbers, pipefitting/steamfitters, new construction plumbers, drain technicians, backflow technicians, plumbing salespeople, and estimators.
Program Learning Goals
Goal 1: Graduates will possess the skills necessary to obtain an entry-level HVAC Technician position.
Student Learning Outcomes – Students will:
• Identify HVAC/R equipment and system components, their functions, and their correlation within a system
• Install various heating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment
• Pipe a hydronic heating system per manufacturer specifications
• Develop and apply competent wiring skills
• Demonstrate industry specified soldering and brazing techniques
Goal 2: Graduates will demonstrate safe HVAC practices and obtain an understanding of the significance of safety procedures in the HVAC environment.
Student Learning Outcomes – Students will:
• Perform tasks in accordance with OSHA guidelines
• Exhibit proper usage of personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Demonstrate the safe practices usage of all tools and equipment
Goal 3: Graduates will be able to perform entry level troubleshooting and preventative maintenance on various heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
Student Learning Outcomes – Students will:
• Demonstrate entry-level diagnostic and service procedures for residential and light commercial air conditioning systems, such as split systems, ductless systems, and package units
• Demonstrate entry-level diagnostic and service procedures for residential and light commercial heating systems, such as furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, and rooftop units
• Demonstrate entry-level diagnostic and service procedures for residential and light commercial refrigeration systems, in particular walk-in coolers, icemakers, and freezers
Goal 4: Graduates will develop the hands-on skills required to install, service, and maintain residential and light commercial plumbing systems safely and efficiently.
Student Learning Outcomes – Students will:
• Assemble and install water supply, drainage, waste, and vent (DWV) systems using proper tools, materials, and techniques.
• Perform pipe joining methods such as soldering, brazing, threading, and solvent welding with accuracy and code compliance.
• Install and service plumbing fixtures, valves, and pumps to ensure correct function and performance.
• Conduct system testing and inspection procedures to identify leaks, pressure issues, and operational faults.
Goal 5: Graduates will use technical skills, code knowledge, and troubleshooting techniques to plan, install, and repair plumbing systems while maintaining clear and professional communication on the job site.
Student Learning Outcomes – Students will:
• Interpret and apply local, state, and national plumbing codes to system layout, installation, and repair.
• Read and develop plumbing blueprints and isometric drawings for accurate system planning and layout.
• Diagnose and repair plumbing system malfunctions using systematic troubleshooting methods.
• Communicate clearly and professionally when discussing system issues, repair plans, and job site coordination.
