Program Objective
The Industrial Mechanics concentration in the Mechatronics Technology program prepares graduates for entry-level industrial maintenance roles by developing skills in mechanical power transmission, alignment and installation, bearings and lubrication, hydraulics/pneumatics, and electrical drive systems. Emphasis is on safe diagnosis, repair, and preventive/predictive maintenance practices with accurate documentation and work management tools.
Career Opportunities
Industrial mechanics technicians are employed in diverse settings such as metals, paper/wood products, plastics, utilities, and large distribution centers. They frequently work on the plant floor and in maintenance shops, installing and aligning mechanical drives, servicing pneumatics/hydraulics, and restoring equipment to reliable operation.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Goal 1: Graduates will possess the skills needed to obtain an entry-level technician position in the mechatronics field.
Student Learning Outcomes – Students will:
- Demonstrate the ability to set up and operate electronic equipment safely
- Demonstrate safe setup and operation of various electro-mechanical, digital fabrication, and kinematic systems
- Goal 2: Graduates will be able to troubleshoot electrical, electronic, and mechanical systems using theoretical principles and measured values to resolve operational issues.
Student Learning Outcomes – Students will:
- Demonstrate competence with circuit identification
- Demonstrate competence with print reading
- Demonstrate competence in using various pieces of test equipment to gather information about a circuit or system’s operation.
- Demonstrate correct use of hand tools, power tools, and safety equipment (PPE)
- Goal 3: Graduates will be able to wire, configure, and verify motors, starters, and VFDs, and interface sensors and actuators with PLC I/O to achieve reliable machine operation.
Student Learning Outcomes – Students will:
- Produce PLC I/O connections for common sensors and actuators and verify proper operation.
- Demonstrate start/stop control and basic fault recovery for a simple automated system.
- Demonstrate basic setup and operation of variable frequency drives.
- Goal 4: Graduates will be able to install, align, and commission mechanical and pneumatic systems to specified tolerances.
Student Learning Outcomes – Students will:
- Demonstrate safe installation of basic mechanical and pneumatic components.
- Produce a simple procedure for a mechanical/pneumatic system and verify basic operation.
- Produce documentation, inspection results, and confirmation of requirements.
