PA State Vehicle Safety Inspection Course – March 1

Johnson College’s Continuing Education Program will be holding a Pennsylvania State Vehicle Safety Inspection course on campus March 1, 3, 8 & 10, 2021 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Space is limited. The total cost of the course is $200 for cars and light trucks. There is additional $75 fee for other vehicle categories. The Pennsylvania State Vehicle Safety Inspection course requirements include 12 classroom hours, a written test and a two-hour tactile test scheduled independently with the instructor. All must be completed before receiving certification from PennDOT. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis according to the date of payment. Class size is limited to 12 students so participants are encouraged to register early. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid operator’s license for each class of vehicle they intend to inspect. Classes will be held in the Automotive Center of the Weaver Building on the Johnson College campus.

Continuing Education Offers Specialized Soldering Training Course

Johnson College has added an IPC J-STD-001 Soldering Training and Certification Course to its Continuing Education Program. This specialized course introduces the materials, methods, and acceptance criteria for producing high-quality soldered electrical connections. The inaugural course will be held during the late afternoons or evenings starting Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2020 through Friday, Oct. 30, 2020. The total cost of the course is $750. This 16-hour course can be utilized by workers in industries such aerospace, bio-medical, computer technology, and electronics to name a few, who are interested in expanding their careers while helping their companies grow.

The course will focus on modules 1 and 2 of the IPC J-STD-001. Module 1 includes: General requirements: applicable documents; materials, components, and equipment requirements; general soldering and assembly requirements; cleaning; printed circuit board requirements; coating, encapsulation, and staking; anti-tampering; and rework and repair. In module 2, students will learn how to make wire and terminal connections; demonstrate wire stripping, wire tinning, and gold removal; and assemble turret, bifurcated, pierced, hooked, and hollow cup terminals to the highest performance standards. Upon successful completion, students will receive an IPC Certification in J-STD-001 soldering.

OBDII Emissions Training Class

Johnson College’s Continuing Education Program is currently enrolling students into its next OBDII Emissions Training class. The class will be held on the Johnson College campus from December 13, 2021, through December 16, 2021, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Space is very limited to allow for social distancing.

The student is placed on the state’s roster for the class by calling 570-702-8981 or 570-702-8979. Students then can visit https://campscui.active.com/orgs/OSJohnsonSchoolofTechnologyDBAJohnsonCollege#/selectSessions/2934435/filter/session=50166335 to pay the College for the classes. To purchase study material and a test called “EI”, students should visit www.patrainingportal.com. The student should then print the study guide and bring it to the class.

The OBDII computer monitors a vehicle’s emission control systems in real-time and is capable of informing a motorist or technician of a systemic issue the moment it occurs. The system operates through a series of indicator lights, drive cycles, trouble codes, and readiness monitors. During an inspection, an emission analyzer scan tool plugs into the diagnostic connector that is attached to the OBDII computer and communicates with the vehicle. The OBDII computer relays to the scan tool whether it has discovered errors in the emission control systems. The emission analyzer then determines whether the vehicle is being operated in compliance with emission standards.

The class fee of $180 is paid to Johnson College. The study material and testing fee of $39.99 is paid directly to the PA Training Portal (https://www.patrainingportal.com/).

Continuing Education Program Offers Welding Basics Class

Johnson College’s Continuing Education Program is now enrolling students into it’s Welding Basics class that will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2020 from 8am-12pm on the Johnson College campus in Scranton. Class cost is $150.

The Welding Basics class will provide the basic knowledge and skills for various forms of welding (MIG, TIG & Stick). Students will learn basic terms and definitions, welding safety and machine setup. Each student will also have the opportunity to try their hand in the booth for basic welding demonstration.

Continuing Education Program Offers 285 Hour CNC Training Course

Johnson College’s Continuing Education Program’s 285 hour non-credit certificate Computer Numerical Control training will begin on Monday, October 5, 2020 and will run Mondays through Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. on the Johnson College campus in Scranton. The training is designed for individuals looking to enter the high-demand machining field and will cover the theory and hands-on practice of both conventional and high-demand machining field. Students will learn blueprint reading, and math with an emphasis on the use of metals and the stresses placed upon them.

Johnson College’s Continuing Education Program is offering four exclusive online Healthcare courses. They include: Clinical Medical Assistant, Electronic Health Records Management, Medical Billing & Coding, and Pharmacy Technician. Students who enroll in Johnson College’s exclusive online courses learn at their own pace and on their own schedule. The education and training these courses provide give students the opportunity to advance in or begin new careers in Healthcare, one of our region’s essential industries.

The Clinical Medical Assistant course is designed to prepare students to function as professionals in multiple healthcare settings. Medical assistants with a clinical background perform various clinical tasks including assisting with the administration of medications and with minor procedures, performing an EKG electrocardiogram, obtaining laboratory specimens for testing, educating patients, and other related tasks. Job opportunities are prevalent with physician’s offices, clinics, chiropractor’s offices, hospitals and outpatient facilities.

The Electronic Health Records Management course prepares students to understand and use electronic records in a medical practice. Students will review the implementation and management of electronic health information using common electronic data interchange systems and maintaining the medical, legal, accreditation and regulatory requirements of the electronic health record.

The Medical Billing & Coding course offers the skills needed to perform complex coding and billing procedures. The course covers: CPT (Introduction, Guidelines, Evaluation and Management), specialty fields (such as surgery, radiology and laboratory), the ICD-10 for both diagnosis and procedure coding, and basic claims processes for insurance reimbursements.

The Pharmacy Technician course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Content includes pharmacy medical terminology, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining generic and brand named drugs and much, much more.

Please join us for our Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Health Science Technology Center on Tuesday, March 26, 2013(rain or shine). Ceremony will begin at 4:00pm and will conclude at approximately 4:30pm. The College will host a Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce Business Card Exchange in the new building following the Ribbon Cutting at 5:00pm.

Johnson College broke ground on the Health Science Technology Center project on September 20, 2011. Through an academic and master planning process, the College determined that a new building dedicated to health science was needed in order to offer technology-based academic programs in emerging health science fields. With the aging of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s population and related healthcare needs, plus the impact of the new medical college in Scranton, employers will be seeking a larger pool of highly skilled personnel in health science fields.

The first program to be housed in the new building is a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program. PTAs assist a Physical Therapist in delivering therapies to the patient and help patients with exercises and other therapeutic treatments. The first class is planned to start in Fall 2013, pending all approvals from associated accrediting agencies.

To finance this new building as well as potential new degree programs, Johnson College is raising money through its first-ever Capital Campaign – the Next Century Campaign. The total goal is $4.5 million. To date, approximately 80% of the goal has been raised, which includes a $1.5 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program matching grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
